Feature Presentation:
Manga Entertainment finally release Macross Plus, the movie edition, on DVD. I got it just for the new scenes. I don't know why they didn't have plans to dub it. It's basically a combination of the original OVA series into one, the story line is about the same, but there are so many parts they removed, others scenes were rearrange & they have added new scenes, like a new beginning, Guld's battle scene with the Ghost Fighter, as well clips of their past that explain a more detail relationship of the main characters. They added a new song, called "I Wanna Be An Angel" to Sharon Apple concert. I find it a little too short for a movie & they removed some scenes that I enjoy in the original OVA, but I did like the new ending.
Video:
I wonder why they didn't actually improve the image a little bit better. It is a little better then the VHS version, but I don't really see the different. Beside that, the image is pretty clean, but you can see there isn't any improvements.
Audio 01: Japanese 2.0:
I found no problem, very clear.
Audio 01: Japanese 5.1:
Unable to test it, since I don't have a 5.1 surround system, I can't really say much.
Subtitle:
Well, the first thing you will noticed, you can't turn off the subtitle. However, the subtitle are easy to read. Yellow suits quite well, green, not really.
Menu Option:
Nothing much, just a Macross logo in the corner. There are 4 options, "Play The Movie", "Scene Select", "Setup" & "Extras". However, there is a nice beat music of Sharon Apple.
DVD Extras:
There isn't much, just the original credits from the OVA, a really bad character profiles section, a photo gallery & trailers of the OVA episodes.
Packaging:
It's blue with the Macross Plus title, nothing interesting. In the back, there is a picture of the YF-19. The insert have a chapter list & it's also a mini-poster. The disc itself is pretty plain. There isn't much work done with the packaging.
PC Viewing:
Watching it on the PC is the same as watching it on the TV. Very clean, no problem at all, very little pixel (little squares popping in & out), both normal mode & full screen mode. The sound is just great. The movie is place on one single track.
Overall DVD Rating:
It's a big plus if you're a real fan of the Macross series, but if you already own the VHS version, it's not really worth it, unless you want 5.1 surround sound feature. Other then that, the new scene are worth to see.
