Feature Presentation:
Special thanks to Geneon Entertainment for sending a copy for a review for this site. It's been a while that I have seen a movie release, but this one really hits the spots. This movie is awesome, pack with actions, cool music that goes along with it. Not to mention this movie is completely done CGI! Though, the coolest part that is a mix of both the traditional Anime within a 3D environment. The mecha design are awesome. This movie also have a share of human connection to it: how human emotions can lead to destruction & chaos. The action started right off the back with stunning visual effect of the battle. Deunan Krute is fighting for survival in a all out war what is left on the city, against something that isn't human. When everything is almost lost in the battlefield, a group of unknown soldiers save her, though Deunan that they are just another enemy. She was captured or was she? Someone from her past, Briareos, has a duty to protect her & he brought her to a city of Olympus, humanity last hope. Learning from the war that ripped the world appart, the half of the city population is made out of Bioroids, engineered human that doesn't have emotions, to keep the peace. However, humans greatest enemy is still other humans, ruled by their emotions of hate towards Bioroids seek to destroy the peace. It's up to Deunan to uncover the secrets & hopefully save humanity from destroying itself.
Video:
Geneon Entertainment did a very great job. The movie is feature on Widescreen format. If you got a Widescreen TV, you're going to enjoy this even more. Since the movie is entirely done by CGI, it's almost perfect, crisp & clean. There is also usage of the "angle" feature of your DVD player. If you select to watch the movie is English, all the credits will be watermarke in English. If you select to watch it in Japanese with subtitle, it will flipped to the original Japanese credits. However, you don't have the options to change it directly from the movie, only when you set it up the audio from the menu. I do note that you can skip all those warnings & logos when you first load the DVD by just pressing the "Menu" button on your remote control.
Dubbing: English:
The dubbing is really very well done. Since this ia remake of Appleseed, it features a totally brand new cast. The voices for Deunan & Briareos are the best, which really similar to the Japanese voices. It's about 90% of the original Japanese.
Audio 01: English 5.1:
Unable to test it, since I don't have a 5.1 surround system, I can't really say much.
Audio XX: English 2.0:
Just letting you know, there isn't an English 2.0 audio track on this DVD. This is artificially made from the 5.1 audio track, that's why I noted it as "XX". I found no problem with the audio, but I bet it would be alot more interesting with the 5.1.
Audio 02: Japanese 5.1:
Unable to test it, since I don't have a 5.1 surround system, I can't really say much.
Audio XX: Japanese 2.0:
Just letting you know, there isn't an Japanese 2.0 audio track on this DVD. This is artificially made from the 5.1 audio track, that's why I noted it as "XX". For some reason, this audio track is softer then the English track. There is a different in volume if you switch it during the movie. Other then that, no problem.
Audio 03: Japanese DTS:
Unable to test it, since I don't have a DTS surround system, I can't really say much.
Subtitle:
Geneon Entertainment have selected a great font, very easy to read. Yellow for the regular subtitling & white for Japanese signs & text. There is only one subtitling track, which is for the Japanese dialogue. There isn't any subtitling for the vocal music as they are all English & none for the English track, as switching that mode, all the text & credits are in English.
Menu Option:
The menu is also in widescreen format, but if got just a regular full screen TV, it will display in that format with no problem. The menu is really cool, you get to see the battle scene that starts off the movie, though you should really hit Play soon so it doesn't spoiled the action! There is the "Play", "Setup", "Screen Access" & "Extras". Selecting any of the options will make a little animation, like you're in a virtual computer. The background music is one of the battle music.
DVD Extras:
There isn't much extra to show off here, except the cool audio commentary track from the Japanese director & producer with in-depth views on the making of this movie. There will be subtitling that goes along with it. Since there is cool music in the movie, you get to see it all together a special selection that groups them together. Last, a staff profile who made the movie all together.
Packaging:
The package isn't as great as I hope to be as the movie would be, nothing fancy. On the cover, you see Briareos holding Deunan with a firing background. In the back, you see some screenshots from the movie with a close up of Deunan. The insert is simple, carrying the same image as the cover, along with a full chapter list of the movie. There is also a special insert on where the music came from, along where you can get the OST. The only thing that is really special is the DVD disc itself, with a very glossy look on the close up of Deunan. Very nice.
PC Viewing:
Watching it on the PC is the same as watching it on the TV. Very clean, no problem at all, very little pixel (little squares popping in & out), both normal mode & full screen mode. The sound is just great. The movie is place on one single track as you play the movie, so loading time is really small. You can fast forward to the beginning to the lend with one move on your mouse! Like on your regular DVD player, you can skip the warnings & logos when you load the disc, just use the "menu" option to go to the menu screen.
Overall DVD Rating:
There are moments you will feel your heart race with the breathtaking action. This movie is just awesome, bring the best of both worlds, traditional Anime style with a 3D environment. It's a perfect blend. Check it out & you will see what I mean. It's going to be a blast, so sit back & enjoy.
