Feature Presentation:
Special thanks to Right Stuf International for sending me a pre-release copy for a review for this site. This is a preview of what's going to be release, so not all information will be available until then. As you can tell from the artwork, this Anime adventure is a classic. It's the first time it's been release on DVD for North America. I think it's the typical mix of all type of shows into one entertaining fun. You get your strange evil guy who controls some sort of cult, mecha robots trashing everything, a weirdo doctor who got a bad taste for justice, an unpopular police force and, of cource, a cute singing shy idol who can kick butt, which the police force is using her to boost their popularity. An odd combo, right? There is more! There is even a live-action parody for Japanese power drinks, which doesn't make any sense, but make you giggle. All in all, it's very interesting & very entertaining.
Video:
Right Stuf International has work on it really well. This Anime is pretty old, but the animation is still pretty good. Clear & smooth, there is a little static here & there. The episodes are all on different tracks, it will have a little loading time whrn you move on to the next episode. By the way, you can skip all those warnings & logos when you first load the DVD by just pressing the "Menu" button on your remote control.
Dubbing: English:
I find the dubbing really well done. However, the dubbing was done a while ago. After all, this is just a re-release from the original VHS version, with the exception that this one got the original Japanese version. It's about 85% of the original Japanese.
Audio 01: English 2.0:
The English track isn't the default on this DVD. You still have to switch it if you want to watch it in English.
Audio 02: Japanese 2.0:
The Japanese track is the default track. It's great that both Japanese track & English track are at the same volume, so I don't have to adjust the volume of the TV while changing the tracks.
Subtitle:
There is only one subtitling track for the Japanese audio. You can only get the subtitle for the Japanese text & sign, as well the English translation lyrics of all the songs when this is turn on if you play the English track. I think it's better that you have the option to have subtitles without translating the dialogues.
Menu Option:
The menu is pretty simple. No fancy animation or anything. You see a picture of the Maron Namikaze on the left side, followed by the menu list. You got the "Play All", "Episodes" selection, "Extras" & the "Set Up". The background music is one of the songs that she sings, which have a nice beat to it. If you go to the other menus, the background music changes to another song, which included the introduction theme.
DVD Extras:
There isn't much extras on this DVD. First, you got this "Live Action Parody Commercials" for some strange energy drink, which is pretty funny by itself. However, if you seen the series before checking out the extra, you got the chance to see it then, so it lose it's humor watching it again. Also, you will get the English credit list. That's pretty much it.
Packaging:
Well, the package is pretty simple as well. On the cover, you get to see all the characters, the idol Maron, the Chief Hattori, the strange doctor & the evil villains. In the back, you get some screenshots. The insert is pretyt cool. It's thick cardboard paper, loaded with information. You see Maron. You get explaination about the world of "Sentai", as well lyrics of all the songs, both in original Japanese & English translation, as well the characters of the police force. Oh, you also get a little ad for that silly energy drink. Since it's a pre-release, there is no cover for the DVD disc itself.
PC Viewing:
Watching it on the PC is the same as watching it on the TV. Very clean, no problem at all, very little pixel (little squares popping in & out), both normal mode & full screen mode. The sound is just great. The episodes are on different tracks on the DVD, so it will take a small time to load when you move on to the next episode. Like on your regular DVD player, you can skip the warnings & logos when you load the disc, just use the "menu" option to go to the menu screen.
Overall DVD Rating:
A good Anime classic. I do find it very entertaining & I do have a few good laugh & it does have it cute moments.
