Feature Presentation:
Special thanks to Geneon Entertainment for sending a copy for a review for this site. This is the first time in a long time that I have seen an old Anime classic. I think this Anime is older then me. Honestly, I haven't even watch the series, but here I got the movie. I find it it's not so bad, if you're a fan of classic Anime & the style the animators have used back then. It's kinda funny to see how classic Anime show nudity.
Video:
Geneon Entertainment did a very great job. The entire showing is completely digitally remastered. Though, I do see some pixeling here & there, but it's only minor. It's still pretty good for an old Anime classic. To top things off, the series is feature on Widescreen format. If you got a Widescreen TV, you're going to enjoy this even more. Since the movie is on one single track on the DVD, there is no loading time or changing tracks when you move on. I do note that you can skip all those warnings & logos when you first load the DVD by just pressing the "Menu" button on your remote control.
Dubbing: English:
The English dubbing is alright. It was dubbed a while ago & I don't think it have been redubbed. It's about 80% of the original Japanese.
Audio 01: English 5.1:
Unable to test it, since I don't have a 5.1 surround system in my home, I can't really say much. Though, this is the first time that the Evangelion series have a 5.1 audio track. According to many fans, it was really cool!
Audio XX: English 2.0:
Just letting you know, there isn't an English 2.0 audio track on this DVD. This is artificially made from the 5.1 audio track, that's why I noted it as "XX". I found no problem with the audio, but I bet it would be alot more interesting with the 5.1.
Audio 02: Japanese 2.0:
No problem found.
Subtitle:
Geneon Entertainment have selected a great font, very easy to read. They use green for the introduction & ending themes, the rest is yellow & white for Japanese signs & text. There are two tracks of subtitling. One track is for the sign subtitling & the other one is for the Japanese dialogue.
Menu Option:
The menu is also in widescreen format, but if got just a regular full screen TV, it will display in that format with no problem. There is alot of animation in the background, which are clips from the movie, & the menu loads in sync with the background music. It's a little annoying, but it's only for a few second delay until it loads. There is the "Play", Screen Access", "Set Up" & "Extras". The background music is one of the musics during the movie.
DVD Extras:
In the extras, there is a digitized original movie program, the original "Coroner's Report" introduction you see in the being of the movie, since it was watermarked into English text, as well conceptual arts. It also included a 12 page booklet, which includes Characters Guide, behind the scene comments from the original Japanese cast & Lupin creator "Monkey Punch". Though, I find a little silly to put it in the booklet, just put it in the extra section on the DVD.
Packaging:
The packaging is so so. It's not one of the greatest I have seen. On the cover, you see the main characters of the movie, well, the known characters in the series. In the back, you get a few screenshots. The insert, well, it's actualy that 12 pages booklet I mention before. Since the DVD case is a clear one, you will notiece that the cover itself can be flip around, though I don't like the "opinion" cover, too yellowish! The DVD disc itself is just just red with Fujiko on the left.
PC Viewing:
Watching it on the PC is the same as watching it on the TV. Very clean, no problem at all, very little pixel (little squares popping in & out), both normal mode & full screen mode. The sound is just great. The movie is place on one single track, so loading time is really small. You can fast forward to the first episode to the last episode with one move on your mouse! Like on your regular DVD player, you can skip the warnings & logos when you load the disc, just use the "menu" option to go to the menu screen.
Overall DVD Rating:
Well, the movie is so so, but I think you will enjoy it if you like old Anime classic.
