Feature Presentation:
Special thanks to ADV Films for sending a copy for a review for this site. I find this series pretty cute. Magic, love & three hotties fighting for one guy are what this series is all about. In this world, every person can use magic, from infant to little old ladies, but not all magic are created equally for everyone. Each person have a limited times one can use magic. Once their count is down to zero, poof! They turn into dust. Everyone must keep their magic count in check. Here you get to meet the most unlucky guy, Kazuki Shikimori in the magic world, not only he is a big loser in his school, but he can only used his magic 8 times. No girls like him, not even talk to him. One day, a girl name Yuna appears in his dorm room, claiming to be his wife. Surprise, he ran out the door & ended up being caught by two other girls, the hot Kuriko & Rin, who want to be Kazuki's wife. However, Kazuki's feelings for Yuna is something more. Here is an all out magic battle for Kazuki, but he got no clue why they are after him, as he knows he is a loser! He found out that his family comes from a line of world famous magicians & these hot girls are only after his genes or is it more then just that? Things couldn't be worse for him as his class turn jealousy against him, then a mysterious ghost is about to lose her home call Kazuki for his help & later, a summon demon running around school. Kazuki is more then meets the eyes.
Video:
ADV Films did a very great job. I found no problem, the image are clear & the color looks perfect. The episodes are on a different track, so there will be a small loading time when you move on to the next episode. Each episodes are separated into 6 parts: the prologue, the introduction, part A, part B, ending & the preview for the next episode! This is with the exception of the first episode, there is no prologue. Also, at the very end of the last episode, you will get to see a preview on what is to come on the next volume. I do note that you can skip all those warnings & logos when you first load the DVD by just pressing the "Menu" button on your remote control.
Dubbing: English:
The dubbing is really great. It's about 80% of the original Japanese.
Audio 01: English 5.1:
Unable to test it, since I don't have a 5.1 surround system, I can't really say much.
Audio XX: English 2.0:
Just letting you know, there isn't an English 2.0 audio track on this DVD. This is artificially made from the 5.1 audio track, that's why I noted it as "XX". I found no problem with the audio, but I bet it would be alot more interesting with the 5.1.
Audio 02: Japanese 2.0:
No problem found.
Subtitle:
ADV Films have selected a great font, very easy to read. They use yellow for the introduction, ending themes & the Japanese dialogue & white for Japanese signs & text. There are two tracks of subtitling. One track is for the sign subtitling & the other one is for the Japanese dialogue. I might note that every odd numbered episodes, the intro & ending subtitles are in English, while the even numbered episodes are in Japanese on this volume.
Menu Option:
The menu is really simple. It's Kazuki running away from Yuna, who is chasing him. There isn't a "Play All", nor a "Screen Access" feature, just a selection of one of the 4 episodes, "Set Up" & "Extras". There is also a "Preview" for the next volume of this series. There isn't any special effects if you select any options. The background music is one of the background music from the series.
DVD Extras:
Here you will get an translator notes, giving you an in-depth process how the dub was done for this series, along with an art gallery. There is also the original Japanese promos & the non-credit opening & ending. That's about it.
Packaging:
The design is quite colorful. On the cover, it is a very night artwork, almost like a painting. You see the sexy Kuriko with other characters you will meet up. If you look closely, you can see a chibi Kazuki, In the back, you get some screenshots with the cute Yuna. The insert is really cool, it's turn into a school newspaper, which information on what's going on, with warning & spell casting! On the DVD disc itself, it's Kuriko again with all heart shape in the background.
PC Viewing:
Watching it on the PC is the same as watching it on the TV. Very clean, no problem at all, very little pixel (little squares popping in & out), both normal mode & full screen mode. The sound is just great. Since the episodes are on different tracks, it will take time to load when you move on to the next episode. Like on your regular DVD player, you can skip the warnings & logos when you load the disc, just use the "menu" option to go to the menu screen.
Overall DVD Rating:
Boy, do you feel sorry for Kazuki or what? I don't think you call that lucky. I find it series which fun & enjoyable. Don't you wish you can cast magic, too?
