Welcome to the Anime UMD review section. Since the announcement by Geneon Entertainment that they will be first releasing Anime on the new Universal Media Disc (UMD) format for the PlayStation Portable (PSP), others have followed & here we are! I hope that this will be the first Anime review site to have a special section for Anime UMD. I hope you enjoy the reviews & please, send me your feedback or any disagreements of any review, I will put it in note.

Last Update: 22/04/2006

With the release of the Sony PSP, Sony has introduced a new format, the Universal Media Disc, or UMD for short. This small UMD disc can hold up to 1.8 GB of data, which is enough space for complex & rich games. However, it is made not only just for games, but also movies & episodes for series. It acts like a DVD, which can features different audio tracks, subtitles & so forth, but it is limited to the space that isn't taken by the main event. However, UMD also got the regional code blocking features like the DVD, so you can't buy a Japanese release UMD & play it in your North America PSP.

You might ask the main question: if I got the DVD version, why get a UMD version of it? Well, that's really up to your choice, but here you are the pros & cons.

Pros:
  • Small & portable.
  • Protected disk case.
  • Quality of images is very good on the PSP.
  • Perfect to bring your favorite movies along for the ride.

Cons:
  • You must have a PSP to view UMD discs (for now).
  • Limited space, so you won't get everything like the DVD version has.
  • Cost ratio for some releases, which DVD are cheaper then UMD.

Bandai Entertainment:

Geneon Entertainment:

Since the first announcement that Geneon Entertainment is the first Anime company to be releasing Anime on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) system, there are two other Anime companies who fellow suits, Bandai Entertainment & Manga Entertainment.

However, bad news has hit for this new format. There are reports that most major companies has stop or reduce their UMD releases. It seems that even all the hypes, this format is not that popular for movies. Bandai Entertainment have already announced that they have halted production & releases of this format, though they have only release five UMD. Geneon Entertainment still continued releasing Anime in UMD format. Since UMD stocks changes over time, I'll just link you the list...

Why am I so different?
I'm hoping to give you exclusive report on the world of Anime in UMD! Since this is a brand new format, I'll try my best to keep you informed. All the reviews will be covering everything on the UMD, meaning every language track, all of the extras, so forth. As well, I will be trying to minimize spoilers, so I won't get the fun out. It will also have the UMD stats, the introduction & a summary with ratings. However, due that most Anime UMDs have gotten their DVD counterpart release already, it will also be discuss to see if it's worth while to get a UMD version as well.

Not only that, sometimes I do watch the Anime again in a later date, with new inputs. So, I have added an update date as well, if any. To me, a review is never completed once. Watching it again always give you a new insight! Also, I added a price guide, so you know you will find the best possible price as well the best places to shop!
